Abu Dhabi Day Trip from Dubai: Costs, Mosque Rules and What to See (2026)

Abu Dhabi is a 1.5-hour drive from Dubai, and a guided day trip starts at ~AED 143 with hotel pickup. One 2026 change matters most: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is no longer free – visitors from outside the UAE pay AED 10 and must pre-book an online access pass. Do it yourself by bus for ~AED 50 return, or let a tour handle the booking, the abaya and the driving.

Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free to visit?

Not any more. Since September 2026 the mosque charges admission: AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders and AED 8 for visitors arriving through a tour operator. Worshippers still enter free, as do visitors aged 60 and over, children under three and People of Determination.

Visitors must pre-book an online access pass on the mosque's own site, szgmc.gov.ae, rather than turning up and paying at the gate. Opening hours for visitors are 09:00–20:30 Saturday to Thursday, and 09:00–11:30 then 14:30–20:30 on Friday.

The mosque also runs free guided walk-in tours lasting 45–60 minutes, in English and Arabic, led by its own cultural guides. So the AED 10 is the ticket: what a paid tour buys you is the three hours of driving, the booking, a guide for the rest of the city and, for women, an abaya to borrow.

What does an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai cost?

The cheapest honest answer is about AED 50 return on the intercity bus, plus AED 10 for the mosque. A guided tour costs roughly three times that and removes every piece of admin.

Bus fares are paid with a nol card, not cash. Tour prices come from GetYourGuide and are converted at the fixed peg of 3.6725 dirhams to the dollar; they move with the date, and the cheapest seats go first.

How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai, and can you get there by train?

Abu Dhabi is about 140 km from Dubai, roughly 1.5 hours by road each way. Tours build that into a 9-hour day, which is why an Abu Dhabi trip effectively costs you a whole day of a short Dubai holiday.

The train is about to change this. Etihad Rail's Dubai station at Al Yalayis opens on 30 September 2026, with passenger services to Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi taking about 57 minutes. Fares and timetables had not been published when this was written, so for now the bus and the road are what you can actually plan around.

What do you actually see on the tour?

The premium full-day tour runs about 9 hours door to door, with the Grand Mosque as the anchor. After the mosque it takes in Qasr Al Watan, the working presidential palace, the observation deck on the 74th floor of Etihad Towers, a drive along the Corniche, and photo stops at Emirates Palace and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Entry to Qasr Al Watan and the Etihad Towers deck are part of the premium option rather than the base ticket, so check which one you're booking. Lunch isn't included – there's free time at Souq Al Jami' by the mosque. Qasr Al Watan occasionally closes for presidential events, in which case the Louvre replaces it.

Pickup covers Dubai city hotels, apartments, Port Rashid and the Dubai Harbour cruise terminal, but from the airport only one hotel is served.

What is the dress code at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

Long, loose, ankle-length clothing for both men and women, and women must cover their hair with a headscarf. Shoulders and knees stay covered, and shorts won't get you in. The same standard applies at Qasr Al Watan.

The mosque stopped lending abayas to underdressed visitors after the pandemic, which is the trap behind all the "free abaya" advice still online. You can buy one for around AED 45 at Souq Al Jami' next to the mosque – or book a tour like the one above, where the guide hands women a clean abaya to wear and return.

Can you visit Ferrari World on an Abu Dhabi day trip?

Not on a standard tour – Ferrari World admission is a separate ticket, and it's on Yas Island, away from the Corniche sights. The day trips that include the park cost from ~AED 723 per person, against ~AED 143 for the sightseeing day, because the park ticket does most of that work.

Ferrari World's headline ride is Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster, which reaches 240 km/h in under 5 seconds. Yas Island's own multi-park passes start at ~AED 435 for two parks, and the park's daily hours shift by season, so check them on the day you book. Realistically, Ferrari World is a full day of its own rather than a stop on a city tour.

Is the Louvre Abu Dhabi or the BAPS temple worth adding?

The standard day trip only passes the Louvre Abu Dhabi for photos. If the museum is the reason you're going, book a version built around it: Grand Mosque and Louvre full-day tours start at ~AED 283 and include entry.

BAPS Hindu Mandir, the stone Hindu temple that opened in 2024, is free to visit but requires online registration, and it turns away visitors who haven't booked. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–20:00, closed Mondays, and sits beside the Dubai–Abu Dhabi road, which is why it now appears in tour names as a third stop.

Half day or full day?

Take the full day if this is your only visit to Abu Dhabi. Nine hours is enough for the mosque, a palace and the Corniche without rushing, and the driving is the same either way.

A shorter mosque-focused trip of about 5 hours suits anyone with an evening booking in Dubai, or travellers who only want the building everyone comes for. Staying longer than a day is a different trip: two or three days would let you add Yas Island and Saadiyat's museums properly.

Is an Abu Dhabi day trip worth it?

Yes, once, for the Grand Mosque – it is the reason the trip exists, and the rest of the day fills in around it. The most-reviewed tour holds a rating near the top of the 5★ scale across more than 27,000 reviews, with guides and the smooth pickup drawing most of the praise.

Book the guided day if you want the mosque pass, the abaya and the driving handled; take the E101 bus if you'd rather spend the difference in Abu Dhabi.
